Commune of Bouches-du-Rhone, Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur region, Fontvieille is a charming town located at the foot of the Alpilles, at the gateway to the Camargue. It is located between the very tourist cities of Arles, Baux-de-Provence and Paradou.

Covered alleys of over 4000 years have been found on the territory of the town, testifying to a very old human occupation. Developed in antiquity, it forms a first medieval village in the twelfth century, before experiencing a real breakthrough in the fifteenth century with the beginning of the exploitation of stone quarries. Founded in 1790, the town of Fontvieille has gradually become an important agricultural city and now has several AOC and AOP as the wine of the Alpilles, the olive oil of the valley of Baux-de-Provence, or the wines Coteaux-des-Baux-de-Provence.

Very popular and appreciated by visitors, the city of Fontvieille unveils a rich architectural and historical heritage to discover the time of a stay in the surroundings.

Things to see and do

Also known as Daudet Mill, the Saint-Pierre mill is the most famous windmill in the city. Built in 1814, it is also one of the last to have stopped shooting. Although the legend says the opposite, the writer Alphonse Daudet never lived there. A hiking trail allows you to enjoy the building while discovering the local fauna and flora. It leads to the castle of Montauban, where the author of the Letters of My Mill spent the last years of his life. It is part of the Parcours Daudet, a small tourist promenade touching the four mills of the city.

North of Fontvieille, do not miss the chapel of Saint-Jean-du-Grès, at the foot of the Alpilles. Parish church until the second half of the seventeenth century, it has a beautiful semicircular apse covered with a cul-de-four.

Listed as a Historical Monument, Estoublon Castle has remained famous in history for having served as a setting for the famous television series, Les Gens de Mogador. Rebuilt at the end of the 17th century, it is since the late 1990s dedicated to organic farming for viticultural and olive-growing purposes.

You can discover, during your walks, the tower of Canillac, the fountain of the village, or the troglodyte habitat at Planet. It is still possible to see the Roman aqueducts, as well as the vestiges of covered walkways, or the wash house.
