Vassy Castle is located in the commune of Étaule, in the Yonne department, a few kilometers north of Avallon.
It was built at the end of the 16th century and extensively remodeled in the 19th century when an additional wing was built in 1880. This wing, very massive, in neo-classical style, is a height of additional floor compared to the initial dwelling.
A sculpted portal (17th century), a dovecote and a chapel dating from 1700 but built on earlier bases complete the description of the place.
The chapel (former village church) was restored in 1978. A pink granite stone now supports the altar: it comes from the Benedictine abbey of La Pierre-qui-Vire (in Morvan).
Also visible are the coats of arms of the families who owned the place, the Saillans and the Cromots. More recently, in 2019, a gold leaf cross as well as stained glass windows designed by visual artist Marc Couturier were installed in the chapel.
The estate, protected as historic monuments, remains private property and is not open to the public. The exteriors can be admired during a walk. Information on +33 3 86 34 14 19.
