Bourg des Pyrénées-Orientales, in the Occitanie region, Estagel takes place about twenty kilometers from Perpignan, in Catalan country. It is located not far from Tautavel, Latour-de-France and Rasiguères.

Occupied since prehistoric times, as evidenced by the signs of the man from Tautavel found not far away, the territory of Estagel has experienced many upheavals over the centuries due to its strategic geographical location. In the midst of the conflicts between France and Spain, the town has retained from this period a mixed culture which makes all its charm.

Mainly agricultural, the village of Estagel is known today for its wine-growing activity, with vineyards allowing the production of Rivesaltes and Muscat-de-Rivesaltes.

Things to see and do

Erected in the 14th century, the Saint-Etienne-Saint-Vincent church today benefits from an inscription in the Historic Monuments. Romanesque building, it consists of a nave with groin vaults flanked by chapels and lateral buttresses. In bricks and stones, the Saint-Étienne-Saint-Vincent church of Estagel notably unveils a very beautiful altarpiece of Christ from the beginning of the 18th century with in particular a bas-relief representing the flagellation of Christ. In the fifth chapel, do not miss to discover the Hispano-Moorish style terracotta paving of the 16th and 17th centuries and the Notre-Dame du Rosaire altarpiece with paintings representing the adoration of the shepherds, the flight into Egypt or the adoration of the Magi.

A pre-Romanesque building, the Saint-Vincent church takes place on the heights of the village, thus offering a breathtaking view of the Canigou or the Agly valley. Currently closed to the public, it consists of a small nave overhung by a bell tower and a facade covered with concrete. The site itself has been transformed into an open-air theater, also providing visitors with a picnic area.

Other religious buildings take place in the municipality of Estagel like the chapel of the Immaculate Conception or the chapel of Notre-Dame-de-Montserrat.

Listed as a Historic Monument, the Visigothic cemetery of Estagel brings together more than 200 graves from the 5th and 6th centuries. The latter are formed by buried slabs of schist.

While strolling through the small town, do not miss to admire the statue of François Arago, astronomer and statesman from Estagel. Inaugurated in 1957, it is the work of Marcel Homs.
