The Cordeliers Convent of Embrun, in the Hautes-Alpes, now houses the town's tourist office.
It was in the 13th century that a first Franciscan convent was built in the city: the religious then depended on the general chapter of Moirans (near Grenoble). Located outside the city, it was destroyed in the 14th century and a new convent was immediately built in the center, according to the will of the Lord of Dauphiné.
Another convent will be built in the 17th century after the citadel was razed by order of Louis XIII, which freed up land. During the Revolution, the church which served the monastery was first transformed into a grain market, then it was partially burnt down. And in the end, the nave and the south aisle were destroyed in 1912. Today, the north aisle remains, made up of several chapels. Painted decorations having been brought to light, they were restored from 1969 to 1971. The frescoes were carried out in the 15th and 16th centuries by Italian painters.
Apart from these remains of the church, some rare but beautiful monastic buildings remain, such as the refectory and parts of the cloister (now part of private property). The site of the former convent is listed in the Inventory.
The Gothic-style chapels and their frescoes are accessible to the public, from the reception of the tourist office. A room also houses an exhibition which traces the history of the convent.
