Who hasn't heard of the village of Domrémy? This little locality in the western Vosges is where France's famous national heroine, Joan of Arc, was born in 1412.

The house where she was born, a listed Historic Monument, is actually open to visitors - 4 rooms including her bedroom - along with an interpretation centre with permanent exhibitions. It tells of the daily lives of peasants and the Arc family during that era, the young girl's quest to reconquer the territory occupied by the English, and the restoration of Dauphin Charles VII to the throne.

The site of the Basilica of Le Bois-Chenu, 2 kilometres above the village, is where Joan of Arc is said to have heard voices. Built between 1891 and 1926, the basilica is an important place of pilgrimage.

The glory of the village, Joan of Arc is everywhere in Domrémy-la-Pucelle: there is a national day devoted to her on the second Sunday in May, as well as a monumental annual show at the basilica.

Small village in the Vosges, Domrémy-la-Pucelle takes place about ten kilometers from Neufchâteau, in the heart of the Meuse Valley. The world-famous hometown of the famous Joan of Arc has lost none of its natural charm, which still attracts many visitors each year.

Settled in the Celtic period as evidenced by the remains of walls and ancient tumuli found there, the territory of Domrémy-la-Pucelle developed in the course of the Middle Ages before reaching fame thanks to its most famous resident, Joan 'Bow. Originally property of Lorraine, the town finally joined the Kingdom of France in the late eighteenth century.

Full of charm, this city of eastern France attracts especially by its rich architectural heritage as much as by its fascinating history.

Things to see and do

Classified historic monument and labeled houses Illustrious, Joan of Arc's birthplace is probably the most visited site Domrémy-la-Pucelle. Purchased by the department in the early nineteenth century, it was completely restored, unveiling its facade including a tympanum carved coats of arms of the fifteenth century. Nearby, a statue of Joan of Arc in armor kneeling completes the picture. Inside, it is possible to discover the birthplace room, the room of Jeanne, the room of the brothers or the storeroom.

Overlooking the Meuse, the Basilica of Bois Chenu was erected near the place where Joan of Arc had heard voices. Built in the late nineteenth century, it is the national recognition of the French Monument to Joan of Arc.

Place of Baptism of Joan of Arc, the Saint-Rémy takes place not far from his birthplace. Built in the Gothic style in the thirteenth century, it has had many additions over the centuries, including a reverse shift in the early nineteenth century. You can admire many works of art dedicated to the famous French fighter, like sculptures and beautiful stained glass windows. We also admire a fresco of the late sixteenth century depicting the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian, a statue of St. Margaret or a replica of a statue of Joan of Arc, based in Winchester Cathedral.

In May, up to Domremy in May that celebrates the arrival of spring through shows, exhibitions, a medieval market and still many other cultural and historical events.

Every second Sunday of May, the town celebrates the feast of Jeanne d'Arc including a wreath laying, a Mass and a meeting of Brownies.

A sound and light history is offered every year between June and July on the square of the Basilica of Bois Chenu.
