The Château de Pocé is located in the commune of Distré, in the department of Maine-et-Loire, a few kilometers southwest of Saumur.
It was the seat of a castellany. His lord received rights in particular from the work of the boilermakers and glassmakers established on these lands. More unusual, on Trinity Day, women deemed pretty by the officers had to come and dance at the castle...
Located in the northwest of the town, the castle succeeded a Roman villa located near the old Roman road which linked Doué to Saumur and Angers.
In the 11th century, the stronghold was owned by knights. A first feudal castle is then mentioned.
The current building dates back to its old parts from the 15th century, and was enlarged and remodeled in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Dry moats and the remains of a drawbridge are still visible.
Two of the four medieval towers have been preserved, one of them being connected to the imposing gatehouse by a curtain wall.
Large-scale dwellings have become residential or agricultural buildings.
Outbuildings are also installed.
The whole has retained a real character thanks to the tower and the gatehouse but deserves to be highlighted.
The private property, classified as a historic monument in 1862, was recently purchased.
This feudal testimony in the countryside surrounding Saumur can mark a walk in a bucolic setting.
