The Gassendi museum Digne-les-Bains was established in 1885. First housed in a former fire police, installed since 1909 in a former hospital having undergone rehabilitation.
Dedicated to the natural sciences and the fine arts, the institution received in 2003 a renovation and a new museum.
Its collections include cabinets of curiosities which are presented documents and objects relating to the fauna, flora and geology of the region as well as many works of art (paintings and sculptures) from the fifteenth to the twenty-first century of regional artists or having resided in particular evoking the scenery of the Alps and Haute Provence.
The philosophy advanced by the establishment of a dialogue between art and science, ancient and contemporary, the interior and exterior.
The uniqueness of the museum is indeed offer an outside run (including specific sites in the city or in the countryside, as hamlets and isolated villages) have inspired contemporary artists. Most of the works are within walking distance and free.
