The keep of Curçay-sur-Dive is located in the commune of the same name, in the Vienne department, 12 km west of Loudun.
This square tower of five levels was part of a fortified castle built at the end of the 14th century by Lord Huet de Curcay in order to defend the small town and the region against the English, during the Hundred Years' War. It was integrated into a chain of defensive sites along the right bank of the Dive.
However, it was during the Wars of Religion that the main building of the castle was destroyed. Until then, the tower was connected to it. A few other vestiges remain: a portal, a round tower (restored in the 19th century), traces of hanging, fortified elements.
The keep for its part has watchtowers and machicolations. A spiral staircase serves the interior floors.
A terrace is set up at its top. The top floor also has a restored ribbed window inside. The openings have remained virtually unchanged, despite some modifications due to window enlargements.
The dungeon is not accessible to the public for security reasons.
Its impressive silhouette can punctuate a walk in this ancient city where other heritage sites of character have been preserved, as well as troglodyte houses.
