Coutouvre is a commune in the north of the Loire. It is part of Roanne Agglomeration, and is on the township of Charlieu. Coutouvre has about 1,100 inhabitants and an area of 21.98 km².
The origin of Coutouvre goes back to the existence of a Gallo-Roman village called "Costolbrum" distorted "Costobrum" which means "the open hillside." Around 970, during the reign of Lothair, mentioned "Villa Cotobrio" became 1410 "Cothobrio". The village and its surroundings were devastated during the Hundred Years War by large companies. The village of Coutouvre was first called "Combouare" name found on old maps (which, by deformation, gave "Vallée de Joux" district that is found in the urban output along the main road leading to Thizy 31) and "Cotvre" became "Coultoure". These names were used in the cadastre.
It does not exist in France of the town of the same name.
