The castle of Connezac is located in the commune of the same name, in the Dordogne department, 15 km southwest of Nontron.
Neighboring a Romanesque church, the estate was mentioned in the 15th century as the property of the Maulmont family, then passed to that of the Conan, whose last descendant, Knight of Saint-Louis, died without a male heir in 1844.
Other owners succeeded one another until 1922, when major restoration work was initiated.
If a machicolated gatehouse still bears witness to the medieval enclosure, the current building dates from the end of the 17th century, built in a classic style. It includes two buildings at right angles ending in pavilions. They form a courtyard enclosed by a surrounding wall.
The beautiful “south” facade with a terrace overlooks the valley with its green landscapes.
The castle was uninhabited for several decades after a tragedy that occurred in 1870: some time after the start of the war, on the sidelines of the annual fair in the village of Hautefaye, a few kilometers away, the young aristocrat Alain de Monéys, suspected of harboring sympathies for Prussia, was lynched and murdered there by around twenty people.
The places, listed in the Inventory, have regained all their serenity. The private property, perfectly maintained, is regularly open to the public (mainly outside), particularly during Heritage Days. Information on +33 5 53 60 38 42.
