Condom

To discover the ancient episcopal city of Condom, the Tourist Office offers, for older children, a visit card, and for the youngest, a treasure hunt around d'Artagnan and his musketeers.

• St. Peter's Cathedral:

• This building is the work of Jean Marre who was bishop of Condom from 1497 to 1521.
• The church Saint-Pierre type "southern flamboyant", is connected to the bedside of the XIVth century of Gothic style but more sober in the development of arches and vaults. This chevet had been restored by Bernard Alaman, bishop from 1369 to 1407. Note the southern portal which is very representative of the flamboyant style.

• The cloister:

• The cloister of Condom dates back to its 16th century foundations but was restored and remodeled in the 19th century.
• Some elements like the doors that opened, one on the officiality and the other on the control, date from the 16th century. The St. Catherine Chapel placed in the East also dates from this period.

• The Sub-Prefecture (not to visit):

• This very beautiful set dates from the 16th century for the bishops' chapel, the current room of the Lost Court (to push the back door to admire the stone staircase and the wrought iron banister), and the 18th century for the big main building and the outbuildings that house the Archives and the Museum.
• We will remember the name of Louis de Milon, who began the construction of the episcopal palace.

• The museum of Armagnac:

• Housed in the stables of the former episcopal palace built by Mgr Milon (1693-1734), the museum presents the history and the different phases of production of Armagnac brandies in an exceptional setting. You can see an attic building with a beautiful U-shaped facade around the courtyard. The large vaulted room on the ground floor houses a monumental press of 18 tons, the first floor a beautiful frame in chestnut wood supports the tiles.
• An 18 ton (19th century) oak press, an evocation of agricultural and wine techniques, and sections devoted to distillation and cooperage, are exhibited in the outbuildings of the former bishopric.
• Open from April 1st to October 31st every afternoon from 3pm to 6pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Closed Tuesdays, Sundays and public holidays.

• Saint Bartholomew's Church of Pradau: Museum of Sacred Art Pradau:

• Located east of the city in the direction of Saint-Puy, this church dates back to some elements still visible from the thirteenth century, was rebuilt in the nineteenth century.
• A beautiful Romanesque door, known as the Hoods, as a visible fire to the bedside, brings the proof. Note the wooden and coffered ceiling of the seventeenth century that covers the chapel of Our Lady of Seven Sorrows. Several paintings painted by Jean-Baptiste Smets in the eighteenth century are preserved.
• A veritable haven of religious art, the most remarkable since the 17th century, the Sacred Art Museum Church of Pradau offers, among other things, a Romanesque doorway called "hoods", a beautiful coffered wooden ceiling of the 17th century. century, unique in the south-west, many sacerdotal objects, several paintings of the eighteenth century painted by Jean-Baptiste Smets. Visitors can admire three recently restored paintings: "the deliverance of souls from purgatory", "the head of Christ" and "St. Francis of Assisi receiving the stigmata".

• Castle of Cassaigne:

• Built in 1247 by Montassin de Galard, abbot of Condom, the castle later became the country residence of the bishops of Condom. At the time of the revolution, the castle became national property and was then bought by the former intendant of the bishops. His descendants still own them.
