Lake Montcineyre is located in the municipality of Compains, in the department of Puy-de-Dome, 40 km southwest of Issoire.
At the limit of the Dore mountains and the Cézallier massif, it is a lake of volcanic origin when an eruption of Montcineyre blocked the course of a river.
At 1,182 m altitude, it has a crescent shape and its area is 40 hectares, reaching a depth of about 20 meters.
The lake is bordered by beech forests and is classified and protected as a natural site.
Be careful, swimming, navigation and even fishing are strictly prohibited, since its waters are a reserve of drinking water for a hundred municipalities.
Still, the beauty of the lake richly mineral waters is a great natural spectacle in itself and from its banks, the panorama on the massif of Sancy is remarkable.
Lake Montcineyre is a delight for hikers as it is located on the GR 30 route.
