In the heart of the Monédières massif, Chaumeil is a very pretty and authentic little village made of freestone (granite) and slate roofs, offering an unobstructed view of the surrounding "puys".
Agriculture, with raising cows and sheep of the Limousin breed, is the main local economy.
The most famous fruit of this territory is the blueberry, wild or cultivated, which is widely celebrated every year on the last Sunday of July.
Chaumeil was internationally famous in the years 1950 to 70 thanks to the child of the village, renowned accordionist: Jean Ségurel. An exhibition is dedicated to him at the Maison des Monédières.
