On old medieval town in Côte-d'Or, now listed among the most beautiful village of France, Châteauneuf nestles at the foot of its imposing fortress, which once belonged to the Dukes of Burgundy, at a strategic location between Dijon and Autun. The castle fort, initially no more than a keep, was extended as time went by. A superb example of Burgundian medieval military architecture, it majestically towers over the Auxois plain and the Burgundy canal. On a visit to this historic monument, you can discover the 12th-century keep, the 14th-century south tower, the main building and the 15th-century dwelling of Philippe Pot, as well as the chapel with ancient mural paintings.

It's nice to take a walk in the flowery medieval side streets of Châteauneuf, where some beautiful old stone houses with turrets still stand.

So be sure to stop by the 15th-century Church of St. James and St. Philip, which contains some lovely polychrome stone and wood statues, including one of St. John the Baptist attributed to Claus Sluter.

Near the north door, the mission cross belvedere reveals a stunning view of the Auxois and the Morvan hills.

In late July, in even years every two years, the pretty streets of Châteauneuf come alive for the Médiévales festival: jousting on horseback, medieval dances, a fire show, artillery shooting, craft stands, etc. offer visitors a 100% medieval experience for a whole weekend!

Ranked among the most beautiful villages in France, Châteauneuf, locally called Châteauneuf-en-Auxois, located in Burgundy, in the department of Côte-d'Or. The city, formerly stop for pilgrims of Saint-Jacques de Compostela, owes its name to its fortress built in the course of the twelfth century.

With stunning views over the plain and the Burgundy Canal, Châteauneuf developed in the Middle Ages because of its strategic position between Dijon and Autun. Visitors enjoy the medieval alleys rich merchant houses dating from the late Middle Ages and Renaissance.

Boasting an important historical and architectural heritage, Châteauneuf, who got two flowers in the competition of villages, seduced by the charm of its buildings as well as by the good atmosphere that prevails there.

Things to see and do

The medieval and Renaissance Châteauneuf heritage is very rich in the old center, and the village has managed to highlight all these beauties.

Châteauneuf Castle is a medieval fortress in irregular plan which he still numerous defensive elements. On the military architecture of the fifteenth century style Burgundian, it was built on a rocky outcrop 475 meters above sea level. Long 75 meters wide and 35 meters, it dominates the valley of the Burgundy Canal. Classified as an historic monument, Châteauneuf Castle was originally built in 1132 before being modified over the centuries. Today, you can still visit it, including the house and the Gothic-style chapel.

The church dates from the sixteenth century Châteauneuf and contains beautiful items classified as an historic monument, like a Madonna and Child fourteenth century, a Saint John the Baptist of the fifteenth century and a Saint-Jacques and Saint-Philippe fifteenth or the sixteenth century.

In the old center, the Renaissance or medieval houses abound. Note for example the house of Mouton, the house of Tin Potter and the house of St. George, all three listed historic monument.
