Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Ille-et-Vilaine

Located just 3.5 kilometers from the center of Rennes, Chantepie is a large city of Ille-et-Vilaine. The municipality has a rather unusual particularity because of its soil composed of extremely strong green schists. Impossible to perforate, this very hard soil prevents houses from having cellars and even foundations.

The origin of Chantepie remains uncertain. Although some of them are named after the Gallo-Roman period, there is no trace of the village built around its church until the tenth century and more conclusively in the 13th century. A simple parish, the town became common in 1789. With large tracts of land, its main activity was agricultural. Besides, cider and butter are its main assets. But the real economic boom was delayed until 1950. The installation of the rennais market gardening then the construction of the Departmental Center for Childhood and the Educational Medico Institute will make Chantepie from rural village to big city in full swing and Job opportunities. Today, Chantepie has exceeded 10 500 inhabitants and is the fifth most populous city of Ille-et-Vilaine.

Things to see and do

The vast territory of Chantepie is still strongly marked by the former rural activity. Numerous green spaces, groves mix with urbanization to give an essentially natural scenery. The motto of the city is to build without damaging nature. It is therefore in a privileged setting that you can discover this atypical city between fields and houses still bearing the imprint of the past. You will easily recognize the houses of the village, whose facades are made of mud, a mixture of clay, gravel and straw or friable schist. While the houses of the notables and the church display walls of Armorican sandstone and other imported materials denoting the wealth of those who had them built. Numerous parks and gardens dot the city, punctuated by children's games and health trails where joggers find themselves willingly. The walkers like to recharge in the calm of the greenery and flowers with motley corollas.

The associations are busy energizing the city. You will certainly find one that fits your desires. You can practice a whole range of sports, from basketball to aikido, including football. As well as directing you to more cultural activities such as decorative painting on wood or even artistic body expression. There are many variations to give you the freedom to choose.
