The Mesnil manor is located in the town of Channay-sur-Lathan, in Indre-et-Loire, 20 km north-west of Langeais.
Located to the north of the town, in the plain, it was rebuilt on the foundations of an earlier building, in 1639, for Marshal d'Effiat, who was none other than the father of the Marquis de Cinq-Mars, favorite of Louis XIII, beheaded at the age of 22 for having plotted against Richelieu... It consists of a main building flanked by two square pavilions. Its main facade was pierced, on the ground floor, with semi-circular arches. The frame of the door of the house is neat and the upper floor is attic, the roof being covered with slates. After being acquired in 1714 by Gilles LEspagnol de la Plante, the king's secretary, seized during the Revolution, the manor which had a chapel was sold as national property in 1795.
We can still observe today that with its common, the manor overlooked an interior courtyard and that it was in the 19th and 20th centuries the seat of an important agricultural exploitation.
Property is always private. Listed in the Inventory, it is not open to the public. However, the estate remains visible from the outside and can mark out a walk in the countryside surrounding this town full of character.
