The common Châlus is located in the Limousin, Haute-Vienne, south-west of Limoges and north-east of Périgueux. She is known for being the place where the English King Richard the Lionheart was mortally wounded in 1199.
Châlus is called Chasluç in Limousin, a dialect of Occitan. Locally, in patois Châlusien, the name of the city was always pronounced "Chelu", as illustrated by the endorsement on a drawing of 1700, representing Castle Châlus in 1460. The first mention of Châlus brevior appears in the Vita of St. Vaast, drafted in the sixth century, who was born in a place called Leucus, which could be Châlus (Castrum Leucus). Châlus (Castel Lucius, Castelluccio) is then quoted in two charters of the cartulary of the Abbey of Beaulieu at 885. The transition from Castel (Castrum) Lucius (Leucus) to Châlus was discussed. Jordan of the Fayardie, archaeologist of the ancient monuments of Perigueux, feeds, for example, in 1750, confusion, attributing the founding of Châlus, like that of a place called Châlus near Montpont in Dordogne, Lucius Plancus Munatius on the basis of speculation. Châlus is ultimately regarded as a contraction of Chatelus, corruption or castellum of diminutives (castellucium, castellacius, etc..) Which mean "castle" or "little castle". Chalusset and Châlucet are diminutives of Châlus. Several origins of the name Châlus Chabrol have been advanced. In the 19th century, some writers, he was named after a Roman Lucius Capreolus, proconsul of Aquitaine under Augustus (son and grandson of the proconsul Duratius) Châlus Chabrol being the castrum-lucius (Châlus) of Capreolus (Chabrol ). This belief was reinforced by a legend, that the land of Châlus estimated to contain a treasure, consisting of a collection of life-size golden statues representing the family of Lucius Capreolus, and that would have been the cause of the seat of Richard Coeur de Châlus lion. Pins from the crest of the city, representing the Roman Proconsul Capreolus and his family return to this legend. For others, Chabrol comes from the word goat language limo, because the castle is perched on a steep site and a goat path led there ... or that only goats and deer (originally found capreolus) could go up. These speculations were old challenged at least from 1854, and the name of the first castle Châlus is now tied to that of Sir Bernard Chabrol who built the 11th century, based on earlier remains, and on request the Viscount of Limoges.
Visit Castle Chabrol Châlus: Symbol of the resistance of the Viscount of Limoges to the kingdom of England in the 12th century, the existence of this fortified place constantly is attested from the sixth century to the 9th century and confirmed by an entry in the records Beaulieu in 885. This fortress, the fifth property of Adhemar of Limoges, was made famous by the fact of the mortal wound received by Richard the Lionheart March 26, 1199. He died in this place April 6, 1199. Richard's body was buried in Fontevrault April 11, 1199, his heart at Rouen, his heart will remain in Châlus and buried in the chapel where they are supposed to always be. Geraud Maulmont of these common areas will receive as a donation in 1275. They belong to larger families of France until 1994. It is then that the Count de Bourbon Busset shall leave this house. Magdeleine Bermondet transform the right side of buildings in the late 17th century. She will be buried in the chapel of which we see the ruins.
