Chalmazel Castle is located in the town of Chalmazel-Jeansagnière, in the Loire department, 30 km north-west of Montbrison (by road).
Located to the south of the town of Chalmazel which dominates the Lignon valley, this is a fortified house mentioned in the 13th century. It was erected as a fortress from the very beginning of the 15th century by the Lord of Marcilly, on the orders of Count Guy de Forez, who financed the work. His will is to defend his fiefs against the lords of Couzan.
Composed of a dwelling and a dungeon protected by ramparts with machicolations punctuated by four round towers, the austere but imposing castle was remodeled in the 16th century by the Marquis de Talaru on his return from the Italian wars. Renaissance style elements and decorations were then added (openwork facade, galleries in the interior courtyard and paintings in the chapel).
However, the site was located in a small region with a harsh climate and its lords soon preferred more comfortable residences…
So degraded, the estate was bequeathed in 1850 by the last of the Marquis of Talaru to a religious community for establish a hospital there. Partly renovated, it will then be transformed into a boarding school.
At the beginning of the 21st century, the castle was acquired by a new owner who carried out work and fitted out guest rooms. Listed in the Inventory, the castle, although restored, has retained its massive fortress appearance, but comfort equipment has been installed. Inside, the courtroom and its 16th century fireplace have been preserved, and in the gothic vaulted chapel, painted decorations dating from the 15th and 17th centuries.
