Cézac

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Gironde

Cézac is a commune in the Gironde department, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, 13 km north of Saint-André-de-Cubzac.

Spanning 19 km², its territory is crossed by several rivers including the Moron, a tributary of the Dordogne. It is also via two important communication routes: the Nationale 10, to the east, coming from Angoulême and which heads towards Bordeaux, like the A10 motorway, to the west, which "arrives" from Saintes.

The locality has retained a rural and green character, mainly covered by agricultural areas and crops (66% of its surface area) but also by forests (14%) and meadows (10%).

Viticulture has established itself since the 19th century as the pillar of the local economy. The vineyard plots now cover more than half of the commune's land and produce wines with the "Côtes de Blaye" and "Bordeaux" appellations.

Mentioned from the 13th century, the village then succeeded a Gallo-Roman villa, as indicated by its name which ends in "ac".

Cézac, which has nearly 2,700 inhabitants, is therefore a stopover of interest for lovers of wine tourism and hiking in general.

Things to see and do

The parish church of Saint-Pierre is the main heritage site of the locality. It was built in the 12th century in a Romanesque style. Only the bell tower remains from this period. During the last battles of the Hundred Years' War, when French troops regained possession of Aquitaine previously held by the English, the church was destroyed (1460). Under the leadership of the Saint-Vincent de Bourg Abbey on which it depends on a spiritual level, it was rebuilt but this time in a Gothic style. Finally, in the last third of the 19th century, the building underwent a major restoration which also included a complete reconstruction of certain parts. Only the bell tower and a side chapel have been preserved. Furthermore, the original orientation is reversed so that the church "opens" directly onto the village square. We note that corner buttresses support the bell tower, and that the rectangular nave is flanked by two aisles while the choir ends with a five-sided apse. Inside, the stained glass windows (financed by the residents) also date from the 19th century, as do the furniture and a beautiful statue of the Virgin.

To the north of the village, worth mentioning is the Domaine de Cézac, a beautiful 19th century residence in neoclassical style with a two-story dwelling extended by two low symmetrical wings, within a six-hectare wooded park. The site welcomes vacationers, receptions and seminars. Contact on +33 6 30 00 44 57. Nearby, the elegant Château de la Baronnerie is also a 19th century manor typical of the region. Surrounded by vineyards, it is now dedicated to seasonal rentals. Contact +33 6 67 36 12 11.

On the cultural side, in the spacious village hall, shows and association events are scheduled throughout the year. Cinema screenings are also organized there. Information at the town hall on +33 5 57 68 64 09.

In the town, for sports enthusiasts, football fields and bowling alley are also accessible to visitors.

All that remains is to enjoy the bucolic landscapes of the countryside surrounding the town and the hamlets: hiking trails (on foot or by mountain bike) are traced throughout the area, with incursions into neighboring towns, which obviously include plots of vines., small rural heritage and wooded areas. Breaks with tastings with local producers are possible.

Still on the hike plan, note finally that from Cézac, it is easy to join the path of the Saint-Jacques path which approaches the "north" bank of the Gironde estuary... Information maps at +33 5 57 58 47 79.
