Cazaubon

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Gers

Reputable spa, Cazaubon takes place in the heart of the Gers, near the forest of Landes. The small village of nearly 1700 inhabitants is located not far from Labastide-d'Armagnac, seventy kilometers from Auch.

Former, the town of Cazaubon was known from the Gallo-Roman era for the benefits of its water. Even today, the village welcomes many curists eager to enjoy the calm and find their energy. The hamlet hosting the spa, Barbotan-les-Thermes, would take its name from the Roman deity of thermal waters, Borvo.

In addition to its thermal center, the charming village of Cazaubon has a beautiful architectural heritage, as well as a pleasant natural setting and conducive to relaxation and discovery of surrounding sites. A wine-growing town, it is also known for its production of Armagnac eaux-de-vie and wines.

Things to see and do

The Old Cazaubon deserves a few hours to discover the remains of the old days. During your walk in this bastide of the 13th century, you will discover arcades and half-timbered houses, the town hall, as well as the beautiful church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste. The site is completed by an old convent, and the Saint-Martin church became too small to accommodate all the parishioners and completed by a new building in the second half of the nineteenth century. Two city gates are still present, that of Hourrat, and that of Uzan.

While strolling in the rest of the town, you will appreciate the bullring which shelters many festivities in the summer season, the Gallo-Roman remains discovered in Barbotan, or the ruins of the church of Saint-Christau.

Do not miss the paths of the Adrien-Barthélémy Park known for its pink lotus, or go to entertain yourself at Lake Uby. Extending over eighty hectares, it is the scene of many recreational activities such as fishing, windsurfing, swimming, and especially rowing. The championships of France are also regularly organized.

From the medieval castle, there is only one tower, and Bégué Castle has been transformed into a luxury hotel.

The church of Saint-Pierre de Barbotan has the particularity of being an old city gate dating from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Built on stilts because its soil consists of hot mud, it was completely rebuilt during the Hundred Years War. In particular, it unveils an ogive-style exterior porch with a Renaissance door, and is listed as an historic monument, as is its sculpted 16th-century portal.

The spa of Barbotan-les-Thermes is one of the main tourist attractions of Cazaubon. Its waters and mud are famous for treating rheumatic and phlebological affections. In addition to accommodation and treatment rooms, the hotel offers a casino and a pleasant park.

Several pedestrian circuits and a green way take place in the town, and do not hesitate to visit the circuit of 7 churches to appreciate all the religious heritage of Cazaubon.
