Cars

The main monument of the commune of Cars is its Romanesque church: Saint-Pierre-aux-liens or Saint-Pierre de Cars. Its construction began in the 11th century. Listed as a historic monument since 1921, it is topped with a unique bell tower, covered in warm-colored mosaics. The church square offers a panoramic view of the vineyards and the Gironde estuary with the Médoc on the other bank, opposite. The village town also houses 150 meters below a cellar built in the 19th century with typical architecture of the department, the Maison Girondine.

The Cars Festival Committee organizes several events each year, including:

• The Cars flea market, the first weekend in June.
• The Cars festival, the first weekend of August, punctuated by a nice fireworks display.

The citadel of Blaye, 3 kilometers from the town of Cars, is the main monument of North Gironde. On a rocky promontory, the town of Blaye has been home to a settlement since the Celtic era. The medieval city, surrounded by ramparts, disappeared to build the citadel, the population rebuilding the city at its feet. Completed under the direction of Vauban in 1689 and classified by UNESCO, it stretches for 1 kilometer along the Gironde. Within it, it houses the remains of a medieval castle, a hotel and restaurants. You can visit the underground passages with a guide from the Tourist Office.

The town of Blaye hosts 2 major local events:

• The Printemps des Vins de Blaye in April.
• The International Jumping of Blaye over several days in mid-July with a remarkable fireworks display on July 14.

The remains of a Gallo-Roman villa can be visited in the adjoining village of Plassac, as well as a museum.

The cave of Pair-non-pair, in Prignac-et-Marcamps, after Bourg-sur-Gironde, is similar to that of Lascaux, its visit allowing you to admire paintings of cave animals from the prehistoric era.
