Castle of Canisy

Monument in Canisy

The castle of Canisy is located in the commune of the same name, in the Manche department, a few kilometers southwest of Saint-Lô.

If a feudal mound would have been ravaged by the Vikings, without knowing its exact location, it was in the 12th century that a feudal building was mentioned, vestiges of which are preserved within the current castle (tower and accommodation).

This first building, in the northwest of the village, has as lord Hugues de Carbonnel, who accompanied William the Conqueror to England before settling in these places.

His descendants will remain lords of the place until the Revolution.

In the 16th century, the feudal building gave way in 1575 to a Renaissance castle designed by the architect François Gabriel. It announces the royal residences, particularly in the Loire Valley.

This castle formed a closed quadrilateral surrounding a courtyard. After a fire in 1740, two sides were ruined and only two cylindrical towers with machicolations remained (dating from the Middle Ages).

The main building is made up of two buildings at right angles adjoining pavilions.

One of the specificities of the castle is to be built of white limestone stones alternating with cut rocks of a purplish-red color.

After the Revolution, returned to the family fold, the property became the center of an important agricultural estate of several hundred hectares.

The castle park was redeveloped several times, including classic squares, ponds, orangery, vegetable garden, etc.

The entire estate is listed in the Inventory, including a romantic-looking farm. We notice that the castle and its annexes present several styles which blend together harmoniously.

Still private, today the property houses a hotel. The park is open to the public every day. Price: annual card of 12 euros.
