Located in Finistere, Brittany, the town of Camaret-sur-Mer takes place eighty kilometers from Brest, and seventy-five kilometers from Quimper. Located at the extreme west of the Crozon peninsula, it is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and is part of the Regional Natural Park of Armorica.
Populated for millennia, the territory of Camaret-sur-Mer develops mainly in the Middle Ages. Occupied by the English during the Hundred Years War, the town is then partly fortified by Vauban in the seventeenth century. It is illustrated in the nineteenth century with the first tests of a propeller submarine by an American engineer, Robert Fulton, before becoming an important sardine fishing port. The arrival of the railway then confers on the Breton city a real link with the rest of the country, thus giving it a better tourist visibility.
Even today, Camaret-sur-Mer is appreciated as much for its exceptional architectural heritage as for its preserved and pleasant landscapes.
Listed as a Historical Monument, Vauban Tower is a coastal defense tower located on the port of Camaret-sur-Mer.
