Located in Finistere, Brittany, the town of Camaret-sur-Mer takes place eighty kilometers from Brest, and seventy-five kilometers from Quimper. Located at the extreme west of the Crozon peninsula, it is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and is part of the Regional Natural Park of Armorica.

Populated for millennia, the territory of Camaret-sur-Mer develops mainly in the Middle Ages. Occupied by the English during the Hundred Years War, the town is then partly fortified by Vauban in the seventeenth century. It is illustrated in the nineteenth century with the first tests of a propeller submarine by an American engineer, Robert Fulton, before becoming an important sardine fishing port. The arrival of the railway then confers on the Breton city a real link with the rest of the country, thus giving it a better tourist visibility.

Even today, Camaret-sur-Mer is appreciated as much for its exceptional architectural heritage as for its preserved and pleasant landscapes.

Things to see and do

Listed as a Historical Monument, Vauban Tower is a coastal defense tower located on the port of Camaret-sur-Mer. Polygonal, it was built in the late seventeenth century and improved at the time of the French Revolution in the late eighteenth century. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the title of Vauban.

Located between the tip of Penhir and the tip of Toulinguet, the site of Kerbonn is part of the defenses of the Brest Gully. It unveils military fortifications of the late nineteenth century, as well as casemates built by the Germans during the Second World War. One of them is now home to the Battle of the Atlantic Memorial and its exciting collections.

While strolling in the commune, do not miss to admire the battery of Toulinguet, the battery of Grand Gouin, or the cross of Pen-Hir. Listed in the Historical Monuments, the latter is a monument to the Bretons of Free France inaugurated in 1951 by General de Gaulle.

Classified in Historical Monuments, the megalithic alignment of Lagatjar still presents sixty-five menhirs in three rows.

You can enjoy the manor house of Coecilian, an old fisherman's house modified in the early twentieth century with the construction of eight turrets. Bombed during the Second World War, it now has only ruins.

You can walk on the banks of the port of Camaret, full of charm, or discover the lighthouse of Toulinguet, before going to the chapel of Notre-Dame-de-Rocamadour, listed as an historic monument, or the church of St. Remi consecrated in the first half of the twentieth century.

Accessible by beautiful walks, the sites of the Tas de Pois, with its incredible maritime panorama, and the pond of Kerloc'h, are to be made absolutely.

Several beaches also allow to enjoy water sports and sun.
