Bourg of more than 900 inhabitants, Briord takes place in the Ain, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It is located on the right bank of the Rhone, at the limit of the department of Isere, about sixty kilometers from Bourg-en-Bresse.

Occupied during the Roman era, then by the Burgundian and Merovingian kingdoms, the territory of Briord has preserved several vestiges of these periods, to be discovered in particular in the archaeological museum.

Always appreciated by visitors today, the municipality of Briord presents an architectural heritage of great interest, as well as a fauna and flora of great wealth. Quiet, the village is a haven of peace where it is good to spend a few days to appreciate the charm of the Ain and the history of this part of the Rhone region.

Things to see and do

Listed as an historic monument, the Roman aqueduct Briord is still visible today in the town. It also has a Roman bridge on the Rhone in good condition. Do not miss the Gallo-Roman port on the river.

The museum of the history and archeology society of Briord is labeled Museum of France. Opened in 1960, it is entirely devoted to the ancient history of the town and its surroundings.

Former medieval castle, the castle of St. Andrew was built in the course of the thirteenth century. Its Merovingian inscriptions are classified as Historical Monuments. Dismantled in the sixteenth century by the troops of Biron, it is now in ruins.

While strolling in the borough, you will be able to discover the Saint-Jean-Baptiste church of Briord.

Several marked hiking trails in and around the town allow to appreciate the local fauna and flora, as well as the architectural heritage.
