Fort du Randouillet is located at Briançon, in the Hautes-Alpes.
It was completed in 1734 and its vocation was at the same time to protect its neighbor, the Fort des Têtes, which defended the city, and the valley of Cervières.
Located at an altitude of 1604 m, it is composed of defense elements grouped around a dungeon on the upper level and barracks on the lower level.
Connected to the Fort des Têtes by a covered gallery 200 m long, the fort of Randouillet is also to the city itself by a bridge that spans the Durance.
At the end of the 19th century, the work was completed by other sites to better ensure the defense of the Italian border at a time when the artillery is much more powerful.
Listed in the supplementary inventory in 1989, the building has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008 as a number of fortifications designed by Vauban or following its principles. The roofs of the barracks were completely restored in 2014.
Always property of the city of Briançon, the fort is visited as part of guided walks. Information on +33 4 92 21 08 50.
