Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Oise

Commune of Oise, in the Hauts-de-France region, Bresles takes place about fifteen kilometers from Beauvais and its cathedral, in the heart of Picardy. It is located not far from Beauvais-Tillé airport, near Fouquerolles, Rémérangles and Rochy-Condé.

Of ancient origin, the municipality of Bresles was once the summer residence of the bishops of Beauvais. From the 19th century, it experienced significant economic growth thanks to the establishment of a sugar refinery which was supplemented by an alcohol distillery in the 1930s. The buildings were completely demolished at the end of the 1990s, ending during this prosperous period.

Today, Bresles has mainly turned to tourism revealing an interesting architectural heritage and a dynamic cultural life.

Things to see and do

Listed as an historic monument, the castle of Bresles was built in the 18th century on the remains of an old fortified castle from the beginning of the 13th century. Former summer residence of the bishops of Beauvais, it now houses the services of the town hall. It consists of two two-storey, right-angled wings with a hipped roof. Very appreciated during the Renaissance, the park which surrounds the castle is now revealed in its 18th century aspect and is included in the pre-inventory of remarkable gardens. Right next door, it is possible to discover the Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul chapel from the first half of the 14th century.

Today classified as a Historic Monument, the Saint-Gervais-et-Saint-Prothais church unveils an 11th century nave, one of the oldest in the region. Built in small cubic rubble recovered from old Gallo-Roman buildings in the area, it now unveils neo-Gothic windows drilled in the middle of the 19th century. From the 16th century, the eastern parts of the church present an elegant flamboyant Gothic style with Renaissance elements, especially on the keystones. The ensemble is embellished with a neo-Romanesque bell tower-porch in the mid-19th century.
