Bourg-Madame

From its rich past, the town of Bourg-Madame still has an important architectural heritage recalling the ancient presence of the Kings of Aragon or France.

A jewel of religious novel Cerdagne art, Saint-Martin d'Hix church dates from the twelfth century and hosted for a long time at the Catalan kings Toulouse threats. Inside, a Virgin and Child from the twelfth century, a Christ the thirteenth century and an altarpiece of St. Martin of the sixteenth century are the beauty of the site. The church was classified historic monument in the early twentieth century.

Built after 1000 and restored in the eleventh century, the church of Saint-Romain Caldégas is the other great architectural appeal of Bourg-Madame. This Romanesque church was classified as an historic monument in 1950. Inside years, no less than six baroque altarpieces of great quality, and a museum of sacred art of the eighteenth century was installed in the nave the Lombard-style pilasters.

The contemporary art space Puigmarti is entirely devoted to the Catalan artist of the same name. Known for its large imagination, the latter was able to revisit impressionism, pop art or erotic art throughout his career. The building houses and local exhibitions of artists and other famous artists throughout the year.

Bourg-Madame has preserved its traditions and cosmopolitan culture by perpetuating playful and full of life events.

Every year in mid-October, the fair in fat Bourg-Madame takes place in the streets of the city. On this occasion, one of the ducks and poultry farmers market offers different farm products. Several events are also offered during the two days of celebration.

The classical music festival of Hix, held in August, revives the royal traditions Bourg-Madame. Created in 1968 by pianist George Rabol, it allows to attend many evening concerts in the beautiful Romanesque church of Saint-Martin d'Hix.
