Former castle of the first half of the thirteenth century rebuilt in the sixteenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the castle Boulogne-sur-Mer is one of the last medieval architectural complexes of fortified city still intact in the country.
Classified as an historic monument, it reveals a polygonal plan surrounded by a moat. Today it still has nine round towers overlooking straight curtains and semi-circular vaulted basements.
Since 1988, it has housed a museum divided into four departments: Mediterranean archeology, extra-European ethnography, fine arts and decorative arts, and local history. On the agenda are beautiful Egyptian sarcophagi, Greek ceramics, Italian and Flemish paintings and an exhibition retracing the history of Boulogne-sur-Mer, from the ancient city to the Boulogne camp.
Temporary exhibitions on different themes are regularly organized.
