The Hotel du Palais is located Biarritz, on the Basque coast, a seaside resort and a region particularly qu'affectionnaient Napoleon III and his wife Empress Eugenie.
On the dunes bordering a field including woods, meadows and even a vegetable garden and a lake, the couple had to first build a villa from 1854. It consisted of a long main building with three wings perpendicular to last more shorter than the others who formed a courtyard. In 1867, the villa was haussée one floor and redesigned. On the death of the Emperor, the Empress Eugenie sold the estate in 1880 to the Bank of the Paris Union and it was soon converted into a hotel and casino.
The whole is however destroyed by fire in 1903.
The hotel is rebuilt on the plans of the architect Édouard Niermans that strives to preserve the walls and facades. If the ground floor has a large hall, a hall and a winter garden rotunda, several hundred rooms and suites are furnished.
Note that the site allowed to use the nascent technology of reinforced concrete and equally notable innovations have ensured the connection between the old parts and the new. A decor style neo-Louis XIII consisting of brick, stone and slate was plated on this "framework". The overall shape of the building still form an "E" evoking the Empress Eugenie.
Today, the hotel retains a certain prestige, and its dining room in the rotunda is considered one of the finest in the world. This emblem of the city, protected as historical monuments, remains an institution of great prestige overlooking the beaches. It was the setting for many film shoots. Renovated in 2017, it hosted the 2019 G7 summit.
To date, the Hotel du Palais houses 111 rooms and 31 suites, 2 restaurants and numerous wellness facilities.
