Located on the fringes of the grove and plain, where the river joins the river Smagne Lay, the splendid castle Bessay is a group of buildings of different architectural styles and successive ages, who come together to form a group to both charming and harmonious. Renaissance, with additions from the 17th century, this castle was the home of the family who was Bessay well "connected" and in favor with the kings of France.
The round tower, the centerpiece of the castle, was built in 1577. This is an elegant tower of 24 meters with a perimeter of 34 meters which was probably built on the foundations of a mediaeval fortress. It has five floors and a basement, a beautiful Renaissance chimneys decorated, a spiral staircase of 100 steps. It is surmounted by a battlemented gateway. It is in this tower that the future Henry the fourth stayed while visiting the region.
The dovecote tower, built in the 15th century, which is a square dovecote of enormous proportions. He had, originally, a domed roof, but due to negligence, he collapsed with much of the main wall. The restored tower (2008) still contains many pigeonholes, of the 3200 original.
The other tower on this site is often referred to as the Pavilion. It is typical of a medieval tower in the region.
The house that connects the towers, dates from the 17th and 18th centuries. In 1866, a third floor was added to the house, with windows and a stone slate roof.
The house of the castle stopped in 1918 and the buildings fell into ruin. Fortunately, the castle has been restored to most of its former glory. The house returned to its origin with two floors and a tiled roof, and the whole is probably one of the most beautiful castles in the Vendee.
