Erected at the beginning of the 11th century at the instigation of Judith, wife of the Duke of Normandy Richard II, the Notre-Dame de Bernay abbey has the oldest Romanesque church that has come down to us. Built under the direction of Guillaume de Volpiano, the famous builder abbot behind the restoration of the Trinity of Fécamp, it is a real treasure visible in the city center of the Norman city.
Modified over the centuries, in particular with a facade rebuilt in the 17th century, it nevertheless has a large number of original elements. The Notre-Dame de Bernay abbey impresses with its austere walls, its narrow openings or its sets of capitals decorated with plants and animals.
The monastic buildings now house the administrative services and the town museum.
