Beauvezer

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence

In the heart of the Haut Verdon valley, in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, stands proudly the village of Beauvezer. Set on a hill in a verdant nature, it is located in the arrondissement of Castellane, about fifteen kilometers from Allos and its ski resort.

Located at almost 1,200 meters above sea level, Beauvezer takes its name from Occitan, bèl and vezer, meaning Bel aspect. Populated since antiquity, it developed in the Middle Ages before suffering severe damage during the wars of religion. It is in the nineteenth century that the small commune is experiencing a major economic boom with the installation of textile industries dedicated to the weaving of wool and which will remain until the middle of the twentieth century.

Classified as a climatic resort, the Provençal town is today appreciated for its architectural heritage as well as for its surrounding landscapes. The views of the mountains make it a magical place to spend a holiday in the calm and the open air.

Things to see and do

Rebuilt at the end of the 19th century after a fire, the Church of the Assumption of the Holy Virgin presents fourteen beautiful stained-glass windows, as well as an impressive rosette above the entrance. In the hamlet of Villars-Heyssier, the church of Sainte-Anne presents a reliquary of Saint Francis de Sales of the seventeenth century. Several other chapels dot the town and its surroundings, as are those of Notre-Dame-du-Plan, Sainte-Croix, Notre-Dame-du-Bon-Secours or Saint-Joseph or Penitents du Mid-seventeenth century. The latter, recently restored, presents a painting of the Holy Family of the same period, as well as an 18th century processional cross classified as Historic Monuments as an object.

Between the two churches of the commune, a square tower is probably a vestige of the old fortified enclosure. It is now used as a steeple. As you walk through the village, you can also discover ancient textile industries for many transformed into hotels.

Take a tour of the Maison du Produits du Pays du Haut Verdon to buy gourmet products produced locally or local handicrafts. It takes place in a house that used to manufacture cloth sheets until the nineteenth century. In the heart of the old village, you will appreciate the stone houses, the fountain or the small courtyards and other small plots in a quiet area. The local architecture harmoniously blends the Mediterranean style with the mountain style.

To appreciate the surroundings, several marked hiking trails are at your disposal from the village. Not far away, there is a water area where you can practice many outdoor and more particularly nautical activities.

Events and festivities

The patron saint's festival of Saint-Pierre takes place at the end of June with various animations.

On July 14, the village offers a torchlight retreat, a ball or a fireworks display.

A show for children and a gift distribution are offered every weekend before the Christmas holidays.
