Beaumont-le-Roger

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Eure

Commune of Eure, in Normandy, Beaumont-le-Roger takes place not far from Grosley-sur-Risle, Serguigny or Évreux.

Originally owned by the Dukes of Normandy, it became the possession of Notre-Dame de Bernay Abbey following the donation from Judith of Brittany, wife of Richard II of Normandy. Royal domain until the beginning of the 14th century, the commune of Beaumont-le-Roger passed into different hands over the centuries. Looted by Henry V of England in the 15th century, it had to wait until the Revolution to experience prosperity again. An important rural communal center at the end of the 19th century, notably thanks to its markets and annual fairs, it was the scene of a large spinning and drapery industry.

Partly destroyed during the Second World War, the city of Beaumont-le-Roger has nevertheless preserved an important architectural and historical heritage.

Things to see and do

Passing through Beaumont-le-Roger, don't forget to admire the Saint-Nicolas church, now listed as a Historic Monument. It was built between the 13th and 15th centuries and is the last survivor of the five churches that once comprised the town. Destroyed by the Second World War and its aerial bombings, it was largely rebuilt between the 1950s and 1970s.

You can also discover the remains of the priory of the Sainte-Trinité from the 11th century, also classified, at like some sections of walls of the old monastic and ribbed buildings from the 13th century, or the Hom manor. This 16th century building is listed as a Historic Monument. It is an old fortified residence taking its name from the Nordic word meaning island in a marsh. The current manor, which replaces a first residence from the 11th century, reveals a triple row of moats, as well as beautiful pavilions in brick and white stone.

Other sites listed in the general inventory of cultural heritage are also visible such as the 19th century Saint-Marc chapel, the town hall installed in the former bailiwick prison from the 16th century or even a beautiful lime kiln from the 18th century.
