Basse-Ham is a commune in the Moselle in Greater East region, a few kilometers east of Thionville.

Its territory of 10 square kilometers is bordered to the north by the course of the Moselle and rises slightly to the south, its landscape aspect revealing then fields and forest.

The resort has the specificity to be composed of three divisions: High-Ham and Basse-Ham along the Moselle, from west to east, and St. Louis, on the other side of the road that crosses the town alongside The valley.

Destroyed during the Thirty Years War (first half of the seventeenth century), burned in 1848, long Basse-Ham belongs to the Province of Luxembourg before joining France and suffer the German annexation of 1870 to 1918 and then from 1940 to 1944.

Having preserved historic heritage interest, the resort enjoys an environment marked by the course of the Moselle she made a tourist attraction (marina, leisure).

Its prosperity ensured especially by the proximity of Thionville and of the Cattenom nuclear power plant allows it to count some 2,300 inhabitants. A pleasant stop for water sports enthusiasts and "nature" in the heart of Lorraine, halfway between Metz and Luxembourg.

Things to see and do

A discovery of the common heritage can be done by following a marked route signs.

Among the steps of this route, an archaeological site where excavations have established an active human occupation since ancient times and the Middle Ages (unearthed a Merovingian vase).

In detail yet, note the town of Basse-Ham as the parish church St. Willibord (the name of an evangelizer of Luxembourg) of neo-Gothic style (XVIII) was rebuilt in 1891. Most affected by the 1944 bombing it was again rebuilt in early 1950. the 1910 and 1894 mechanical clock bells have been preserved. Moreover, inside, we admire the stained glass workshops Gaudin Paris posed in 1952, evoking the life of St. Willibord and several statues: St. Anthony, St. Joseph and a Pieta.

On High Ham, the present chapel St. Mark also dated after the Second War, which replaced an earlier building with a bell tower dating from the twelfth century and the nave of the eighteenth.

The Chapel of Our Lady of Basse-Ham (restored in 1765), several shrines and the Cross (one of which is the sixteenth) still mark the route.

Management then the banks of the Mosel where are arranged a leisure center and a marina, "Nautic Ham." It has 104 mooring rings and a channel 17 meters that can accommodate boats from 5 to 25 m. Certified for its environmental policy, the port provides services and offers quality amenities: bilge into the water, electricity terminals, WiFi, local sanitary and laundry (washing machine, dryer laundry…). A dry dock is also available.

If the port and the base are open all year, some activities however are accessible only to the summer, at least from April to September. This is also the case of river shuttles that connect Basse-Ham in Thionville and allow to understand the valley from a rare angle.

For fans of hiking or biking, the territory of the commune is rich in potential.
