Saint Benezet chapel at Avignon, is located on the eponymous bridge, which now only has four of its original 22 arches.
The bridge over the Rhone on about 900 m as the chapel were built in the twelfth century.
Both fall under the Provençal Romanesque style and were classified as a historical monument in 1840.
Initially the chapel preserved relics of the saint behind the bridge, when he was a young shepherd. These have since been scattered in other buildings in the area.
From the thirteenth century, the chapel was divided into two parts: the upper level, a redesign helped dedicate to Saint-Nicolas (patron saint of mariners, that is to say the drivers of boats and small vessels) a converted chapel in a Gothic style, the lower part remained Roman.
