The Château d'Auvers is located in Auvers-sur-Oise, in the Val-d'Oise, 6 km northeast of Pontoise.
Built in 1635 by an Italian banker in the suite of Marie de Médicis, it became the property of Jean de Léry, king's adviser, at the end of the 17th century. In 1756, passed in the meantime to the Espremenil family, the castle was transformed: the Louis XIII facade was maintained but to the south, two pavilions were added. Several owners then succeeded, including the Prince of Bourbon-Conti.
From the second half of the 19th century, the building deteriorated. In 1890, he inspired Van Gogh, who lived in the village, to paint "Le château d'Auvers au sunset".
The estate was acquired in 1987 by the Val d'Oise departmental council, which initiated a major restoration. The south facade and the French gardens have thus been completely redesigned based on period engravings.
Since 1994, now listed in the Inventory, the site has become an art interpretation centre. A discovery trail dedicated to Impressionism is presented, including the exhibition of paintings by great masters such as Monet, Caillebotte or Pissarro. Modern museography is punctuated by "immersive" presentations, virtual spaces and interactive animations.
The park, the gardens and the nymphaeum (artificial cave covered with a dome and richly decorated) are also accessible.
Throughout the year, workshops, meetings, educational activities and shows and concerts are programmed, not to mention hosting temporary exhibitions.
