The Roman emperor wanted to create a great city in Gaul which shows the Roman power. She was therefore endowed with splendid monuments that are still famous. In the Middle Ages, the city, recently hosting the supposed relics of St. Lazarus became an important place of pilgrimage, and is seen with a new cathedral. The Cathedral Saint-Lazare (1120), Romanesque church of Cluny type, is famous thanks to its tympanum carved with great detail representing the doomsday and signed Gislebertus.
