Head of the canton located 18 km from Agen Astaffort is an old fortified village located on the right bank of the Gers.
Rich agricultural land, (Brulhois wine, fruits, grains, livestock, etc. ...), the village also has various industrial enterprises.
In the 18th century, the population was estimated Astaffort two thousand inhabitants. At last count, it was estimated to 1958 people.
Astaffort back at least to the Gallo-Roman. The village already enjoyed a remarkable situation it is located between two towns of Aquitaine cities: Agen and Lectoure. Institutions for agricultural use are increasing, including some villages. The etymology of the name Astaffort come from a currency used by the ancient "Statfortiter" which means "strong position". This reasoning has applications in the field. Indeed, between the 11th and 15th century the village was dominated by two castles: one of Craster, near the church Ste-Genevieve, and that of Mons, near St. Felix. The city was surrounded by walls comprising two bastions, was entered by three doors: Gers, the Goat, and Corné. During the Hundred Years War, Astaffort pass successively under the domination of the King of England Duke, the family of Armagnac 1453, and Albret, Henri IV. In the 18th century the city grew and fate of its walls with the construction of the suburb Corné.
