Arthez-de-Béarn

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques

Village of Pyrénées-Atlantiques, facing the Pyrenees, Arthez-de Béarn overlooks the valley of the Gave de Pau between Orthez and Lacq. Located in the former sovereign state of Béarn, it is not far from Balansun, Labeyrie and Serres-Sainte-Marie.

Originally a simple hamlet, Arthez-de-Béarn is transformed into a real medieval fortress in the 14th century under the impetus of Gaston Fébus. Seriously damaged by the wars of religion, the village then develops peacefully, taking gradually the face that one knows him today.

Ideally located to discover the most beautiful sights of the region, the town reveals an interesting architectural and historical heritage to discover the time of a stay in this part of southern France.

Things to see and do

Built at the end of the 19th century, the Saint-Etienne church has a 12th century tower tower that originally belonged to the village castle.

While strolling in the commune, you will also be able to discover the chapel of Caubin which was formerly part of the commandery of the knights of Jerusalem. Built by Gaston IV, it houses the recumbent of a knight wearing his coat of mail.

Other religious buildings take place at Arthez-de-Béarn, like the chapel of N'Haux and its gate of the seventeenth century surmounted by a Marian statue, or the chapel of Cagnès, superb building of the twelfth century Romanesque style.

Appreciated for its natural heritage, the village is also located on the roads of Saint Jacques de Compostela.
