Small village of the Somme, in the Hauts-de-France region, Argoules takes place about thirty kilometers from Abbeville, at the limit of the Pas-de-Calais department. It is located in the heart of the Baie de Somme Picardy maritime Regional Natural Park, not far from Maintenay, Saulchoy and Buire-le-Sec.

Of ancient origin, the seigneury of Argoules developed during the Middle Ages, in particular with the construction of its castle. Heavily affected by the Thirty Years War which saw the troops of the King of France clash with those of the Holy Roman Empire, the town has however retained a rich architectural and cultural heritage which testifies to its significant wealth over the centuries..

Things to see and do

Cistercian abbey founded in the 12th century, Valloires abbey was completely rebuilt in the 18th century after suffering the horrors of the Thirty Years War. Listed as an historic monument, this site with neoclassical architecture also has an abbey whose walls are decorated with rockery. The exterior facade recalls the Cistercian sobriety of the Middle Ages, while the interior reveals a much more loaded decoration, with in particular a black marble high altar adorned with two angels in gilded lead or very beautiful woodwork. The convent buildings are also worth a stop with in particular a 16th century dovecote, an old chapter house with a vaulted ceiling, a large living room furnished with paneling, a vestibule with a painting of the fortified city or the former apartments of the abbot and the monks' cells upstairs. At the end of the 1980s, the site was embellished with magnificent gardens labeled Remarkable Garden and extending over more than eight hectares. Also labeled Tourism and Handicap for their ease of accessibility, they blend in perfectly with their natural environment, with plants and flowers grouped by color or resemblance.

Built between the 15th and 16th centuries, the Church of Saint-Germain reveals to its visitors a magnificent visible framework, as well as stained glass windows classified as Historical Monuments. Don't miss the 16th century glass roof depicting the Transfiguration or the 18th Century Wedding at Cana. On the church square, you can discover a remarkable lime tree over 400 years old, classified as a natural monument.

As you stroll through the village, you can also discover the 19th century Notre-Dame-du-Bon-Secours chapel or the castle. Entirely in brick and stone, this historic monument was built in the 16th century before being restored in the 19th century in an elegant neo-Gothic style.
