Monument in Annecy

The cathedral St. Peter in Chains of Annecy dates from the sixteenth century.

Its construction began in 1526 when the building was intended to serve a convent of Celestine. But when the work is completed, the monastery welcomes already Cordeliers and is from 1538 the refuge of the chapter of St. Peter of Geneva.

It turned out that the future St. Francis de Sales officiated there.

Before the Revolution, the monastery was abolished in 1771 and its buildings are then based bishopric, and in 1822, finally, the church became a cathedral, seat of the diocese.

Architecturally, the facade of pure Renaissance reveals the masterpiece of the building: the architect was inspired by that of the Church of St. Maria del Popolo in Rome. Note the Tuscan pilasters and pediment pierced with a still Gothic bay.

The plan of the rest of the cathedral follows that of a basilica with three naves and five bays, the choir redesigned neoclassical though appearing very bright with stained glass windows representing St. Francis de Sales. On the left, a carved wooden pulpit is installed on an eagle. Two altars, two desks and wood carvings are also kept.

The interior decor was sleek moreover when the project received a restoration in the 1930s, however, observed an organ imposing overcoming the main door, which was the subject of a restoration in 1994. It features 2000 pipes.

The bell tower was rebuilt in the nineteenth century.
