Located in the heart of the Auvergne volcanoes and 1000 years old, the Sailhant castle is a fortified castle enthroned on a spectacular rocky outcrop overlooking a magical waterfall.
From a stately tower, the Sailhant castle became a fortified castle during the Hundred Years War. During this period, it was the scene of a permanent struggle between the English and the French, resulting in numerous sieges as well as the construction of fortifications ordered by eminent French families.
Improved and redesigned during the Renaissance, in the 18th century it became a summer second home for Joachim Joseph d'Estaing, bishop of Saint-Flour. After the French Revolution, the castle was used by farmers. Renovated in the 19th century by a famous entrepreneur born in the hamlet of Sailhant, Mary Hiacinth Raynaud, the castle was bought in 1997 by Mr. Joseph Pell Lombardi. The castle required a restoration campaign of about fifteen years. Now fully restored and furnished, the Château du Sailhant offers a historical guided tour through its large room, the seigneurial bedroom, the library and the chapel.
The site has been listed on the Remarkable Site of France since 1945 and as a Historic Monument since September 2019.
