Ancy-le-Franc is a town of nearly 1,000 inhabitants located in the Yonne, Burgundy. The village is located about ten kilometers from Argentenay and Ravières in the heart of Burgundy countryside. It is mainly its fame to the Renaissance castle which still stands proudly on its territory.

Former property of the family of Clermont-Tonnerre, the village of Ancy-le-Franc has a certain charm with an impressive greenery and beautiful monuments, vestiges of the glorious past of the city.

Things to see and do

Older, village Ancy-le-Franc still presents visitors with an eye of the most impressive architectural heritage.

The main tourist attraction is its Ancy-le-Franc Renaissance castle, classified historic monument since 1983. It was built to replace the original castle, which still remained a tower just a few centuries ago. The castle was erected by the family of Clermont-Tonnerre, with the help of an Italian architect Sebastiano Serlio, came to France at the request of François I himself. Built in central plan and quadrangular, the castle consists of four quarters, placed in a square, and you can admire different styles, with the Tuscan order on the first level, or the Doric to the second level. Its roof, very steep, reminiscent of Villandry, another jewel of the French architecture, and inside the building, you can still admire some beautiful frescoes by Primaticcio, coffered ceilings, or beautifully carved woodwork.

Listed historical monument, the funeral chapel of the family The Cosquinot is another monument not to be missed when visiting Ancy-le-Franc. It is dedicated to a large family of the city. Not far away, the Sainte-Colombe church has a beautiful architecture typical of the region.

Events and festivities

Throughout the year, the village of Ancy-le-Franc highlights its heritage and history by offering cultural events more interesting.

The village market is held every Thursday from 8 to 13h. In December, a beautiful Christmas market is also offered inside the castle Ancy-le-Franc.

From May to October, the castle became the theater Ancy-le-Franc Musicancy, a classical music festival. On this occasion, concerts, tours are offered, as well as musical walks in the castle park.

In September, Ancy-le-Franc organizes an interesting medieval festival highlighting the past of the village. On this occasion, enthusiasts are promoting the Middle Ages and the Viking world through historical reenactments, period demonstrations and other events of all kinds.
