The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption of Altkirch in Haut-Rhin, 20 km southwest of Mulhouse, was built in 1845.
She succeeded the first church located on a hill overlooking the primitive village then to a thirteenth building, located in the city center this time became too dilapidated nineteenth century.
The new parish church was thus built on the remains of the ancient castle of the Counts of Ferrette from stone from the tower and the medieval church.
Romanesque style, the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption has a large volume and follows a Latin cross. It consists of a nave with seven bays, a transept and a choir that extends bedside. Note also the gate tower with 4 levels, which cover an octagonal spire with 4 turrets.
Protected as historical monuments, the church houses several works of interest arising for some of the previous building. This is the case of a Christ on the Mount of Olives (XIV), a Pieta from the same period, a baptistery in Vosges sandstone. A painting by Jean-Jacques Henner (portraitist renowned nineteenth century, from the region) representing Christ on the Cross, is also remarkable.
Finally, we observe that the windows are adorned with inscriptions in French or German. The first date to the reconstruction of destroyed canopies during the First War, the second of the German annexation from 1870 to 1918.
