The Saint-Pierre church in the town of Abzac, in the Gironde department, 16 km north-east of Libourne, was built in the 12th century in a Romanesque style. It was badly damaged during the Revolution and was rebuilt in the 19th century.
The orientation of the building has been changed, and a flat apse has been built on the west side. Of the original church, only the dome bay preceding the apse has been preserved.
In addition, a revolutionary inscription, "the people recognize the Supreme Being and the immortality of the soul" was found and is visible above the south door.
The church houses an interesting painted decoration and stained glass windows from the 19th century and several objects classified as paintings, a Stations of the Cross in the form of sculpted bas-reliefs and a pulpit of noble craftsmanship.
The whole is protected as historical monuments.
The church can be a stopover during a visit to this charming village in Libournais renowned for its castles and vineyards. Information on +33 5 57 51 15 04.
