This traditional home from the 19th century was set in a charming, quiet rural setting in the region of Alliers in northern Auvergne. We were happy with our stay - our hosts were warm and interesting people, and Patricia did an excellent job of helping us plan a few of our activites. The house includes a nice outdoor (salt water) pool, which we made good use of. The province of Auvergne seems most beautiful, and offers a large variety of attractions for the whole family (horseback riding, rafting/canoeing/kayaking, zip lines, right in the area. A wonderfully preserved castle and church from 800 years ago is a short walk, and in general, the setting is quite relaxing and rejuvenating. M. Laederich is a model train enthusiast and has built a remarkable network of large gage model trains which you can see, and ride, on the property. Though reticent to speak English, he proved up to the task on the last evening we were there, and having Alscation (sp?) heritage, he spoke German well, so when my French was proving problematic, he and I at least were able to hold forth auf Deutsch. Breakfast was a traditional one (no eggs, meat or potatos) ; good, not great, and a little late for many (9 AM) who might otherwise want to start their day on the early side. There may have been an afternoon tea, but we were not around in the event. The rooms were very spacious, but they could use a thorough dusting in some of those hard to reach places. For Americans not used to the 'schedule, ' we did find it a challenge to be able to get seated at a restaurant - no seating before 7 or 7h30, and no apparent willingness to seat one after 8h45. On the Tuesday we were there, we almost missed dinner altogether, as it seemed every place we tried was closed for that evening. Very good idea to have some French skills, and a cell phone! I would recommend this B and B to those looking for peace and quiet.
