, Le Village - Ercé

Idyllic Cottage in Ercé, Ariège district of Pyrenees. 'Le reflet de la lune' (English : Under the Moonlight) is a typical rural gîte in the small village of Ercé, in the heart of the Pyrenees Regional Natural Park. I did restore myself this former barn in its original style with stone walls and slate roof. The little house situated in the middle of the village, but quietly behind my house in the second row. In the house and on the terraces one is on its own. Ercé is situated 650 meters above sea level and has 350 inhabitants. The slopes, covered by green forests, and green meadows along the river dominate the picture. The people live modestly, mostly of raising cattle. The car is parked in front of my house on a private parking, a small lane leads to the gîte (50 m) for pedestrians only. My name is Marie-Noëlle, I was born here and I would like to acquaint you with the unique and beautiful aspects of my home country. Description of the gîte. Exterior amenities : a large terrace with dining table in the front yard, a second where you can sit comfortably in the shade of my apple trees (or grill), above this, another terrace (solarium) with lounge chairs and views of the mountains. Ground floor : living room with fireplace, sofa, tv, dvd player, WiFi, dining table, fully equipped kitchen and breakfast bar. Spiral staircase to. first floor offering : one spacious room with skylights, a double bed (140 x 200) and two single beds (90 x 190), bathroom with large bath, shower and toilet. Steep stairs to the two beds in. the attic : two single beds (90 x 140) - In Ercé you will find : a Bureau de Poste, an épicerie (with daily fresh bread) and (French) newspapers, a restaurant serving regional cuisine. Some pubs and the next doctor's office are in Oust (4 miles), the pharmacy in Seix, and small and large supermarkets. Some farmers sell cheese, honey, etc. from the farm. Activities : marked trails start outside the front door of my gîte, for example to Cominac, a picturesque mountain village with a panoramic view of Mt Valier (3 miles). You can also fish for trout, go rafting or kayaking, pick berries and mushrooms, explore caves, visit the unique mountain strongholds of the Cathars, romanesque churches and monasteries (eg in St. Girons). There is a tennis court, a climbing garden and spa in Aulus (6 mls), and in the winter to ski shuttle connects Ercé with the station at Guzet (12 mls.).

The Perfect Getaway
We planned to stay for a week, but the place was so great that we decided to stay for another two days. The hostess and the children were just wonderful and helpful, giving loads of information on local sights, routes, products, etc. All the complementary local produce (wine, cheese, chocolate, milk, eggs, pastry) were a perfect introduction to Ariege. The house was spacious and had everything we would ever need and more. The garden was beautiful with all the flowers and lights lit at dusk. We really would like to return some day.

Perfect place, perfect host
This rental is excellent and I highly recommend it. We spent one week at the "Le Reflet de la Lune" and had an incredible time. Marie-Noelle was terrific, providing insight to our many questions about the region. The garden is beautiful, relaxing and colorful, and the inside of the Gîte was warm and cozy. Perfect views of the stars out of the skylight windows on the main sleeping level. Fireplace to keep it warm during cold nights. The location in town is just right, as it sits in between the local restaurant and the market. Here's a tip it took me a couple of days to learn: you can always get a warm pastry in the morning at the local market if you go the day before and tell them what you would like the next day. The local market also has great local ham and cheese. On Saturday there is a large open air market in St. Girons. Also a good bio co-op (organic grocery) there. The local population in Ercé is incredibly friendly and helpful. The location itself is central to many of the features to see in the Pyrénées. The local L'église Notre-Dame de la Mourède is beautiful and if I read correctly has elements from as far back as the early 12th century. There is also an interesting display about the geological features of the Pyrénées near the Chapelle du Calvaire if you take the path to the creek at the end of town. A great choice for a family or couple.

Fantastic stay at Reflections of the Moon in Erce Ariege
The Gite is fantastic, in a quiet location and in the heart of the mountains. Marie-Noelle (the host, who lives next door) was just fantastic, giving us lots of advice by email (google-translate) before we arrived and again in person on our first day. The welcome pack of local cheese and wine was a great way of connecting to the Ariege. It was great to stay in an authentic French house, with an outdoor dining area, chickens in the next yard, in the centre of the village (with a shop and restaurant). The Gite has everything you need for self-catering, washing etc. a luxury bath has views of the sky through a velux roof window! We will visit again for more cycling, hill walking and local markets.

An amazing trip
On our way from Barcelona to Paris between October 23 and 25, we stopped briefly at Ercé, ancient headquarters of the bear dancers, where we spent 48 hours at the charming gite, 'le Reflet de la Lune'. Just a few hours, but we have great time in Erce, that's also enough to get in touch with the locals who celebrated their Autumn fair on Saturday plus a concert of local choirs at the church. We were able to shoot amazing photos of the beauties of autumn and we still have a lots of great activities, the fetes and church music were very special. We like walking down in peace scenery surrounding by flower and mountain. Driving in Midi Pyrenees was also extreme experience... Hope you have another chance here. Thanks to the indications of our hostess Marie Noëlle, who took charge of showing us around her region. We never forget you - Marie Noëlle - a nice, kind - hearted woman. Highly appreciation from Huong Nguyen.

Our home away from home
We were very fortunate to stay for 10 awesome weeks, August to October 2013, during our overseas holiday from Australia. We highly recommend this very comfortable accommodation and its beautiful homely garden. It became our home away from home because it covered all our usual needs. Marie Noëlle is an excellent host; she is not only warm and friendly but an excellent tour guide to the driving, hiking, biking, golfing and culinary delights of the area. Ercé is an ideal village from which to explore the area, the cottage is quiet and has views of the mountains from the garden. We found Marie-Noëlle and her knowledge of, and enthusiasm for the region, made our stay very memorable and we are already planning our return visit, as even 10 weeks is not long enough to fully appreciate this area.
