The royal bastide town of Villeréal, located in the Haut Agenais region in the Dropt valley, was founded in 1267 by Alphonse of Poitiers, the brother of St Louis. From its past as a medieval new town, Villeréal has preserved a superb arcaded square with a 14th-century covered market, and a 13th-century fortified church featuring arrow slits and a crenellated rampart walk.
A local produce market is held every Saturday morning in Place de la Halle.
