Symbol of splendour and immoderation, the majestic building used to host numerous events and prestigious parties during the French monarchy. Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, this huge castle - boasting 700 rooms and 2513 windows! - was built in two important stages. The old castle, former hunting residence composed of the buildings lining the famous marble yard, was built in 1623 during the reign of Louis XIII, father of Louis XIV. Once he had taken office, the Sun King Louis XIV asked his architect Louis Le Vau to make it more attractive from 1661 to 1668. Later, judging this castle too small, the Sun King called his architect in again to enlarge it from 1668 to 1670. This part, which corresponds to the new castle, is home to the luxurious Grands Appartements as we can see them today,. Not to be missed, the visit of the interior offers furniture and prestigious artworks. The famous Hall of Mirrors, decorated with 357 mirrors, is in itself a masterpiece. In the 17th century, this hall was considered as a real luxury, but also as a major change because the guests were able to admire themselves completely. The visit of the place continues with the Hall of the Battles, decorated with pictures illustrating the important military events of France; the chapel dedicated to Saint Louis; the Grands Appartements of the King and the Queen, and the royal opera.
