Nestling on the banks of the Seine, halfway between Paris and Rouen, the charming little town of Vernon boasts a fine built heritage. The imposing Collegiate Church of Our Lady, a listed Historic Monument built between the late 11th century and the late 16th century, combines Romanesque and Gothic styles. It has a 13th-century lantern tower, a15th-century façade adorned with a Flamboyant rose and a Romanesque chancel, as well as modern stained glass windows and an organ case made of carved wood, which you can see on a visit.

Around the church, discover the traditional old half-timbered houses! Dating from the 15th century, the magnificent House of Past Times, which has two corbelled storeys decorated with a sculpted bas-relief depicting the Annunciation, is a former town café that is nowadays the home of Vernon Tourist Office.

A little further on, near to Rue Potard, stands the tall Archive Tower, the keep of the old castle built by Philip Augustus, which housed the notarial and municipal archives of the town from the end of the 18th century.

In the old private mansion of the Le Moine de Bellisle family, the Alphonse-Georges Poulain Museum has collections of archaeology, local history, paintings and animal art including two paintings by Monet: "Water Lilies, 1908" et "Sunset near Pourville".

Before you leave Vernon, don't miss the superb view from the Clemenceau Bridge of the Seine and the Old Windmill, a timber-framed 16th-century building standing on the piers of an old medieval bridge... As picturesque as can be, you can see why this romantic group was immortalised by the famous Impressionist Claude Monet!

As you leave Vernon, heading towards Pacy-sur-Eure, Bizy Castle, built in the 18th century in a classical style, contains beautiful Regency wood panelling, Gobelins tapestries and memorabilia of the Bonaparte family. Superb stables inspired by Versailles and an English-style park with ponds, fountains and statues will round off your visit wonderfully.
